SANTA MARIA       ----- (Text und Musik: Willie Burger)

1) I woke up one morning in the month of November
and heard a man's voice on the phone.
He said: Do you still remember us playing
in a pub about three years ago ?
I answered, I'd surely remember him coming
to our concert in the sweet month of June.
We were jiggin' and reelin', we were jokin' and dancin'
and the evening was full of our songs.

Chorus:
Now we singing this song on Santa Maria,
linda ilha dos Acores. (beautiful island of the Acores)
Singing around with wonderful people,
a heartbeat that's moving along.

2) The man brought with him a mighty old tuba,
which even was bigger than him.
We invited him playing some tunes & some ballads,
while the concert had reached up a height.
He blowed and he tortured it's deep roaring belly,
but masterd the tunes that we'd played.
His cheeks like balloons, his eyes like two mellons,
as he started to play right away...

(Chorus)

3) I asked: What's your name, brass-blowing- wonder ?
He smiled, as he answered to me:
You can call me Joao, the man with the tuba,
the rest cannot ever pronounced !
We were jammin' along for the rest of the evening,
far beyond of the "Shamrock's Green Shore".
At the end of the evening, when the guests were all gone,
it was only us playing along ...

(Chorus)

4) Talking along and remembering the past
the music was still in our ears.
The phone-call seemed not come to an end,
but at last we'd agreed with a deal.
I'd moved, said Joao, for 3000 miles
to the beautiful islands Acores
and I'd like to invite you, meet the people around here,
who are longing to hear all your songs ..

Chorus: (3 times)
Now we singing this song on Santa Maria,
linda ilha dos Acores. (beautiful island of the Acores)
Singing around with wonderful people,
a heartbeat that's moving along.

5) "When we came to the island of Santa Maria
the weather was pleasant and warm.
We meat gentle people, who treated us friendly
and showed us the places all around.
We jammed for a week in rehersals and sessions
with the Donegal ghost on his chair.
At the night of the concert when the spirit was high,
the groove of old Josie was there.

Chorus: Now we singing this song on Santa Maria ...
